An Exhibition of Golden Orbs, Leaves, and Love Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Paradiso. This July, the Stella Flame Gallery presents The Celestial Spheres of Paradise by artist-goldsmith Donna Distefano. The exhibition runs from Friday, July 18 through Wednesday, July 23, with an opening reception on Saturday, July 19, from 5–7 PM, and will feature Distefano’s handcrafted 22-karat gold and fine gemstone jewels representing Dante Alighieri’s vision of heaven.
The Celestial Spheres of Paradise includes golden orbs, precious rings, solid gold roses, and a magnificent meteorite ring, representing Dante’s Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the Fixed Stars, and the Primum Mobile. Each jewel is detailed with scrolls, stars, leaves, and floral motifs, and adorned with rubies, sapphires, and diamonds.
The Empyrean—Dante’s tenth and final heaven—is represented by Distefano’s masterpiece ring, the Love that moves the sun and the other stars. Created in 2013, the ring features 22-karat gold, diamonds, and Gibeon meteorite. Inspired by The Divine Comedy (Paradiso, Canto 33), the breathtaking piece unites several of Distefano’s passions. A student of The Divine Comedy in both English and Italian, she is drawn to the poem’s fusion of mythology, realism, love, judgment, geometry, and astronomy. The ring has previously been exhibited at The Forbes Galleries (2013), The Carnegie Museum of Natural History (2015), and Tellus Science Museum (2020).
